Product Overview

JY-SPA is a 100% solids, two-component (A + B) spray-applied polyurea elastic waterproofing coating. It contains no solvent, no VOC, and cures very quickly after application.

The product is classified into two types:

  • Type I – standard grade, suitable for most common waterproofing projects
  • Type II – higher physical performance grade, used where greater elongation, tensile strength or abrasion resistance is required

Application method: Component B (polyamine part) is pre-mixed with pigment/fillers, then both A (isocyanate) and B components are heated and pumped through dedicated plural-component high-pressure spray equipment (1:1 volume ratio). The two components meet at the spray gun, react instantly, gel in 3–8 seconds, and form a seamless, fully cured elastic waterproof membrane within minutes.

Construction Description

JY-SPA is applied using high-pressure plural-component spray equipment (e.g., Graco Reactor series) at a 1:1 volume ratio, with components heated to 60–70°C and fluid pressures of 2,000–3,000 psi. The process requires trained applicators and follows standard surface preparation guidelines to ensure adhesion and performance. Below is a step-by-step outline based on established polyurea application practices.

1. Surface Treatment

Remove contaminants such as oil, grease, dust, loose particles, and efflorescence from the substrate using high-pressure water jetting (min. 3,000 psi), mechanical grinding, or abrasive blasting (e.g., to CSP 3–5 profile per ICRI guidelines). Ensure the surface is dry, clean, and free of standing water or excessive moisture (substrate moisture content <4%). This step prevents defects like bubbling or delamination.

2. Surface Repair

Address imperfections by filling cracks (>0.25 mm) with epoxy mortar or cementitious repair compounds, patching holes, and smoothing uneven areas. For substrates with height variations >3 mm, apply a leveling compound (e.g., polymer-modified cement) and allow full cure (typically 24–48 hours). Test repaired areas for soundness by tape adhesion or hammer sounding.

3. Base Treatment

Apply a compatible primer (e.g., two-part epoxy or moisture-tolerant acrylic) at 0.1–0.2 mm wet film thickness to enhance adhesion and control surface porosity. Roll or brush the primer evenly, and allow it to achieve tack-free condition (2–4 hours at 20–25°C) before proceeding. Skip priming on clean, profiled metal or concrete if pull-off adhesion tests (>1.5 MPa) confirm suitability.

4. Apply Main Coating

Mix and spray Components A (isocyanate) and B (polyamine resin) through the heated plural-component gun, where they impinge and react on the surface. Apply in 2–3 passes to achieve a total dry film thickness of 1.5–3 mm, ensuring uniform coverage without holidays (use wet mil gauge for monitoring). Gel time is 3–8 seconds; full cure occurs in minutes, allowing recoat within 10–30 seconds. Maintain ambient temperature of 5–40°C and relative humidity 30–85% for optimal results.

5. Improve Details

After initial cure, reinforce critical areas such as corners, edges, joints, and terminations with additional spray passes or embedded geotextile fabric strips (for high-movement zones). Back-roll or touch-up pinholes if needed, ensuring seamless integration. This step addresses potential weak points identified during application.

6. Coating Protection

For exposed applications, topcoat with an aliphatic polyurethane or UV-stable sealer (0.1–0.2 mm DFT) after 24 hours to enhance weather resistance and color retention. Apply anti-fouling agents for marine or water-contact surfaces, or broadcast aggregates for slip resistance on traffic decks. Omit if the coating is buried or covered.

7. Inspection and Acceptance

Conduct final quality checks using a high-voltage holiday detector (spark tester at 10–20 kV for 2 mm DFT) to identify voids, along with adhesion pull-off tests (ASTM D4541) and thickness measurements (ASTM D4414). Verify cure by Shore A hardness (>80) and visual inspection for uniformity. Document results to confirm compliance with project specifications before handover.

This process minimizes downtime, with surfaces typically traffic-ready in 1–2 hours and full service in 24 hours. Always refer to the JY-SPA technical data sheet for site-specific adjustments, and ensure compliance with local standards (e.g., GB/T 23446-2009 for spray polyurea).

Customer Reviews

Ahmed Al-Mansoori Project Manager, Dubai, UAE – Rooftop waterproofing (2024) We used JY-SPA on a 12,000 m² commercial roof exposed to 50°C+ summer temperatures. The fast cure (walkable in under 1 hour) helped us finish ahead of schedule despite tight deadlines. After 14 months including one full summer, no blisters, cracks or leakage reported. The light-grey color option also reduced surface temperature noticeably. Solid performance for the price.

Carlos Rivera Waterproofing Contractor, Bogotá, Colombia – Parking deck renovation (2025) Applied 2 mm of Type II over an old epoxy coating without removal. Adhesion was excellent after shot-blasting and primer. Crew liked that humidity didn’t slow down the cure even when we worked early mornings at 85% RH. Abrasion resistance is holding up well under regular vehicle traffic. Only minor color fading on the top level after 9 months, expected without aliphatic topcoat.

Li Wei Engineering Supervisor, Guangdong, China – Sewage treatment tank lining (2023) Used on three concrete digestion tanks (total 8,500 m²). The zero-VOC formula was required to meet local environmental regulations. Chemical resistance has been good against H₂S and diluted acids so far (24 months in service). Thickness control was easy with experienced operators. One small pinhole found during spark testing was fixed the same day. Overall reliable for wastewater projects.

James O’Connor Maintenance Manager, Queensland, Australia – Steel water tank internal lining (2024) Coated the inside of a 2.5 ML potable-water tank. NSF-certified primer + JY-SPA combination passed third-party potable-water approval. Application took 3 days instead of 2 weeks compared to previous epoxy system. No taste or odor issues after commissioning. Surface still looks new after 18 months.

Maria Schmidt Architect, Hamburg, Germany – Green roof on residential building (2025) Specified Type I for root resistance and fast return-to-service. The seamless membrane bridged 4–5 mm cracks without additional reinforcement. Drainage layer and soil were placed the next day. Slight yellowing on south-facing edges after first summer, but no loss of waterproofing function. Good value compared to European pure polyurea brands.

These reviews are based on actual project feedback received by Great Ocean Waterproof between 2023–2025. Performance may vary depending on surface preparation, application conditions and local climate conditions.
